The extent to which we are killing our planet is shocking. However, the good thing is that raising awareness has been a thing for quite some time now. Being eco-friendly is one of the most important trends of today, and not because it looks good on us. No, it’s because it’s the right thing to do. Now, if you want to be a bit bolder and try to help our environment a bit more, you have to think outside the box. One of the events when we can be green but have no idea about it is weddings. That’s right. Have you thought about making your wedding greener and more sustainable? Take a look at some of the ways in which you can thank our planet for giving your special someone to you:
The venue might be the first thing to have in mind if you want to go green. It’s usually your first major decision, so make sure that you choose wisely. If you’re having a summer wedding and you know that the weather is going to be very nice, you might want to get married outdoors, as this is the best way to cut down on energy use. Luckily, there are so many amazing places where you could get married, such as a vineyard – this can also be quite fairytale-like. Think of botanical gardens or hilltops. You want to be eco-friendly, so you might want to go with places that are actually very green in nature. However, since it’s very difficult to have the whole wedding outdoors (as it might not be everyone’s cup of tea), you might want to have the wedding reception and the party at the same place so that all of you cut back on CO2 emissions.
As far as the preparation for the wedding is concerned, the most important thing to think about is the wedding dress. The first thing that comes to mind when you think about eco-friendly weddings is re-wearing someone’s gown, probably your mother’s. This is an amazing idea, especially because it can be quite emotional and very vintage. You should probably make some alterations to the dress and you will be good to go. Another possibility would be to buy a new gown made out of eco-friendly materials, which might be a bit difficult to find. Next up, your makeup is also something that you can adjust. Opting for natural skin care in Australia and parts of America is becoming more and more popular, so why not go green here as well? Some brands even produce makeup products that are completely edible, which is a great proof that it’s completely natural and safe. On the other hand, regardless of whether you opt for this step or not, it’s definitely something you might want to get as a present. Think about it!
So, are you going to let your wedding be another one where hundreds of trees need to be cut down in order to make paper products? Making eco-friendly invitations is definitely something you want to consider. Paperless is becoming more common, so you can either opt for evites (electronic invites) or simply use recycled paper. This might be a bit pricier than regular paper, but it’s definitely a better option.
The biggest percentage of your wedding decor are flower arrangements, so this is the thing you need to change. Contrary to popular belief, not all flowers are organic – some require chemicals to either keep insects away or to help the flower keep its color and freshness. This is why you have to check if the company you’re hiring is as sustainable as possible. Another option would be to go with artificial flowers, and even though this option might not look appealing to you, there are artificial flowers that look extremely realistic and beautiful. However, there’s also an option that’s a bit bolder, and that is to opt for vegetables as your wedding decor. This might look extremely beautiful, especially if you choose vegetables that are aesthetically pleasing (such as kale which has a sturdy stalk and beautiful green foliage) and substitute some flowers.

Finally, the food. This is where you really know how to go completely organic, and even though it might cost a bit more, it’s definitely worth it. You can also opt for different menus, some of which are quite peculiar for a wedding but could be interesting. Use locally-sourced ingredients such as eggs and dairy products and make them the focal point of your buffet.
You can surely make your wedding a bit more eco-friendly and still have an amazing reception and a very beautiful wedding ceremony, you just have to think a bit more and try and find alternatives to things that are not sustainable. Why not be the change in the world you wish to see?
