I love performing wedding ceremonies. It is a moment of love and happiness. Families and friends gather to mark a life milestone. And I am part of it… sometimes more than once.
People often ask me how I got into performing wedding ceremonies. It was a theatre friend who mentioned I might like doing it. I thought, “Why not?” It is on weekends.
Well, I fell in love with doing them. All the beautiful emotions of the day, love, friendship, family. Just being part of something special for the couple and the community really captured me. It was bigger than me. It was something positive I could do for everyone.
I married couples and baptized their kids. I married one bride and had to do her funeral service too. I did two friends weddings one week apart.
I feel especially honored when I do siblings weddings. For example, I just completed Lara’s wedding last weekend. I performed her brother’s wedding five years ago. It was gratifying to chat with their father again. It is like being part of their family.
It is in these moments that I feel I contribute something unique to our little City. It is in reminding folks that we are all connected. And that feeling of being connected, in sharing life’s important moments, is what reminds us that we are all in this together. That no matter who we are, or what we believe, we know this one thing: Love is what we are doing right. It is the one attribute that brings out the best in our humanity.
