Wedding planners have a difficult and specialized job that not everyone can do well. A good one is a lifesaver – handling problems and unexpected issues that inevitably arise. A bad one can make life – and your wedding ceremony – miserable. Follow this guide to making sure your planner is as committed to having a great wedding as you are.

Reputation Is Everything
Event planning is a business built on word-of-mouth, reference-based advertising. Always check the online reputation of your potential planners. Ask for several references, call them all, and go deeper than a Google search to find out what he or she has done in the past.
Don’t settle for the references of the people whose weddings they have planned. Always talk to the vendors who have worked with the planner as well.
Red Flag: Communication
An event planner is in the communications business. If he or she is tough to get a hold of, if they take a long time to respond to emails or questions, run. As your wedding ceremony draws nearer and nearer, the person planning your marriage ceremony will be juggling a million different things, and all of them require instant, real-time communication. If they’re slow or clumsy in the beginning, when it’s easy, they’ll never be able to hang in when the going gets really rough.
Red Flag: Contracts
Sloppy or inaccurate legal paperwork is a good indication of bad things to come. Contracts are highly detailed – and so must be anyone who is going to plan your wedding ceremony. Errors on basic legal paperwork indicate a lack of thoroughness, which is not a personality trait you want in the person planning your marriage ceremony.
Red Flag: Personality
In some instances, event planners have to be pushy in order to get things done for you. Direct, straight talk is good. It’s never OK to be rude or lose your cool, even under the guise of getting things done for you. Vendors are human beings and will usually work with clients who are demanding, but will walk away from being belittled or ordered around. For event planners, temperament in everything.
Watch for warning signs that your wedding planner may be less than you bargained for.
